R.I.P. Twisted Village

twistedvillage

Just wanted to say farewell to probably the greatest record store I ever found, and I barely knew thee…. and you will be missed dearly.

Twisted village was a great shop for outsider music. There was definately a friendly atmosphere and it seemed that they always had something I wanted. I only regret not giving them a ton of more money.

I picked up the Alexis Taylor (of Hot Chip)  solo record there last year, so I will leave you with some  of that… a great tune called Baby (not the Justin Bieber song)…

Our good friend and yours Elijah Wyman just got done working in the studio with Scott Solter, and we’re very proud of the results…

Particularly this one…

“Small Towns” brings Elijah’s tiny mtns project to that next level. With the help of Scott’s studio wizardry (he has helped such artists as Jon Vanderslice and the Mountain Goats in the past), we find tiny mtns probably a mile further down the road of pop songwriting and sound quality than he has ever been before. With a taste of raggae, a heart connected to the average man, and rhythm that will stick with you for weeks and weeks, Elijah has found his new voice.

We really hope you enjoy it.

And while you’re at it… Why not check out this video by “In The Car Media“, friends of Grinding Tapes who are currently at work on a Dreamtigers video (goosebumps). This was their submission into this year’s Boston 48 Hour Film Festival:

In The Green (48 Hour Film Project 2010) from IN THE CAR MEDIA on Vimeo.

The video is still in the running for awards from the annual film festival. But besides being a very well made film, it prominently features tiny mtns’ “Small Towns” during the credits.

New Damien Jurado- Arkansas

Posted May 5, 2010 by Matt at 1:00 pm · Filed under General, Music News (general), New Releases

jurado

One thing that has me excited lately is the prospect of new music from Damien Jurado.

Damien has been one of my favorite artists for a very long time. A couple of years ago it was a real treat to get to see Elijah open for him at Gordon College.

His new record is going to be called Saint Bartlet and he is currently posting a song a week on his myspace in preporation for the new release. Another exciting element is that the record is produced by Richard Swift in his National Freedom Studio. (I covered Swift a little while ago in my Lost Classics series) Apparently Damien and Richard played everything on the record themselves, so there is a little bit of that funky old time Swift flavor in the online single “Arkansas” here:

Introducing: Seer Group

Seer Group blends sun-warped nostalgia for cassette tapes and analog synthesizers with the sugary-sweet melodies of early video game soundtracks (think Mega Man III vs. Boards of Canada).  These guys are new to Grinding Tapes and are currently finishing up their contribution to a split cassette single with Sylphid.  This will be our first ever electronic release.  Needless to say, we are very excited!

Sleep the Winter by eagleowl

Posted November 22, 2009 by Dylan at 3:39 pm · Filed under Music News (general), New Releases

eagleowl

Edinburgh, Scotland’s eagleowl are releasing a new single this upcoming December 14th on Kilter Records. The song is entitled “Sleep the Winter” and will also include the B-side “Laughter.” This band plays drum-free dirges that captivate and enthrall the listener from start to finish. This is music for a sleepless and anxious evening, one of those long winter nights where you wear your thickest socks and mittens, have a long sip of whiskey, wrap your face in a scarf, and walk through the snow and try to understand your existence. Eagleowl is both a place of introspective empowerment and a faithful shoulder to cry on.

Unfortunately, I didn’t know about this earlier, or believe me I would have made haste to share the information with all of  you. But me and my girlfriend, in search of a movie, stumbled across this treasure of a concert going experience the other night. If you live in one of the cities yet to be hit on this tour, I implore you to go and see it. Andrew provided a positive environment as always, and his passion for music was showcased in a way I had never seen before.

The Calder Quartet are an extremely talented group of young gentlemen who have embarked on what Andrew repeatedly referred to as an “experiment of sorts.” In this experiment they certainly allowed us, the audience, to take part in a number of ways. There were performances from composers Phillip Glass and John Cage on the bill, not to mention solo improvisations on piano from Andrew (a sight to behold), and inclusive retelling of a few “I Get Wet” classics. His solos were riveting acts of a rock-and-roll mind bent out of control and intent on delivering  a piano-style vengeance on the ‘classical’ style. The Calder quartets performances were impossibly vivid displays of what us rock and roll fans miss when we look over the classical section of our record stores. Andrew’s more rock based music and presence provided the glue of hilarity and joy and unity that fans have come to expect, and onlookers were made to love.

If you have never experienced Andrew W.K. in concert (or even recorded) I suggest you spare no expense to do so at your next possible chance. But if you have seen Andrew, I suggest you do whatever is in your power to attend this unique concert-going experience. The dates are few, but hopefully he will extend or return to performing in this fashion again soon.

Here is Andrew’s album of Piano Improvisation, “Cadillac ‘55″, in it’s entirety:

55 Cadillac - Andrew W.K.
