I just wanted to mention that I have a new EP coming out called tiny mtns. I’ll be touring in Aug. in support of it, so if you’re on the East Coast be sure to check to see if I’ll be in your town. It would be awesome to see you at a show. Here’s a song off it called Thicket Holds a Ram. I hope you like it. If you do, you can pre-order the EP here

I am super excited to see Toronto indie folk up-and-comers and recent Paper Bag signees, Rock Plaza Central when they unveil to Boston their highly-anticipated sophomore release Sunday night at TT the Bear’s. The album, which came out this past Tuesday, has a name that makes Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band seem succinct. You can pick up …At the Moment of Our Most Needing, Or If Only They Could Turn Around, They Would Know They Weren’t Alone in CD format at the show, or you can get one of 300 limited edition silk-screened 12″ records at the Paper Bag website.

Max Tundra is playing in Boston with the mighty Junior Boys on May 8th. I just realized that I’m going to be out of town that weekend (which means I’m going to miss Mastodon on May 7th as well, anybody want a ticket?).
But all that does not stop me from loving this new Max Tundra video I spied on Pitchfork a little while back. And I will get around to seeing him eventually, but for this one, point is to Jason who in all likelihood will be in attendance:
Talk about DYI. This guy has been getting great right ups on the old Pfork for years and he still finds time to run around with a camcorder and his ipod and tat himself with a keyboard on his leg in permanent marker. Props for the creativity bro (the song ain’t bad either).

John Vanderslice just added 10 new dates to his spring US tour, including one show at The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge, MA. It’s no surprise that he made the jump to the 500-capacity downstairs, considering he most recently sold out two back-to-back shows at the 200-capacity upstairs. I know I’ll miss seeing him packed like sardines at the upstairs, but I’m glad to see such a good artist finally getting the recognition he deserves.

I am very excited to see The Books when they play a pair of sold-out shows at Boston’s ICA tomorrow. The Books play a highly-recognizable brand of experimental folktronic that combines cello, programmed drum beats, acoustic guitar, and spoken word samples to create unique and frequently-beautiful textures.

I’m the first to admit that I’m a huge sucker for intricate guitar melodies and abrupt time signature shifts. That’s why I’m a fan of Damiera, a super-technical math rock band from Buffalo, NY. The frequently-made comparisons to At the Drive-In are lazy, but Damiera’s music is a similarly frantic and unpredictable musical aneurysm.
If you’re a fan of At the Drive-In, math rock, or neo-prog, you definitely need to see them Thursday night when they headline at The Middle East Upstairs.

Efterklang’s show at TT’s tonight is one of my most anticipated shows of 2009. If you haven’t heard of Efterklang, they’re a fantastic Danish band that captures the bombast and sincerity of other Scandinavian bands like Sigur Rós and Under Byen, while frequently venturing into organic dance territory and at times evoking some of Sufjan Stevens’ more embellished moments. I saw them last year at TT’s, and it remains one of my favorite performances. Don’t miss your chance to see this fantastic international band at such a small venue!
