John Vanderslice just added 10 new dates to his spring US tour, including one show at The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge, MA.  It’s no surprise that he made the jump to the 500-capacity downstairs, considering he most recently sold out two back-to-back shows at the 200-capacity upstairs.  I know I’ll miss seeing him packed like sardines at the upstairs, but I’m glad to see such a good artist finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Here are the shiny new dates:

May 17 at The Partisan, Merced!, California
May 19 at Rickshaw Stop, San Francisco, California
May 21 at Mississippi Studios, Portland, Oregon
May 22 at Easy Street Records, Seattle, Washington
May 27 at Velour, Provo, Utah
May 28 at Kilby Court, Salt Lake City, Utah
May 29 at High Dive, Denver, Colorado
May 30 at Slow Down, Omaha, Nebraska
Jun 5 at High Noon Saloon, Madison, Wisconsin
Jun 6 at Empty Bottle, Chicago, Illinois
Jun 8 at Southgate House, Cincinnati, Ohio
Jun 9 at Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Jun 11 at Johnny Brenda’s, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Jun 12 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York
Jun 14 at Middle East Downstairs, Boston, Massachusetts
Jun 17 at Local 506, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Jun 18 at The Earl, Atlanta, Georgia

Damiera treated fans to a blistering 40-minute set at the Middle East last night.  It was amazing to see them expertly reproduce every single note of their dizzying guitar lines in a live setting.  One very pleasant surprise was the inclusion of “Heartbeat” from their obscure and out-of-print debut EP as the encore.  Below, you can check out the recording of “Heartbeat” from last night’s show.

Damiera at the Middle East Up

I’m the first to admit that I’m a huge sucker for intricate guitar melodies and abrupt time signature shifts.  That’s why I’m a fan of Damiera, a super-technical math rock band from Buffalo, NY.  The frequently-made comparisons to At the Drive-In are lazy, but Damiera’s music is a similarly frantic and unpredictable musical aneurysm.

If you’re a fan of At the Drive-In, math rock, or neo-prog, you definitely need to see them Thursday night when they headline at The Middle East Upstairs.
